The future is a visit to the past.
Everything we were afraid of is there,
Our hopes and dreams and desires are there.
Reviewing the chapters in faded pages, new
revelations appear and disappear.
Even regretting dashed hopes yet to come…
Some wisdom comes through time and even a fool understands,
destiny was written in the stars… one only need to behold!
The future is a visit to the past.
My postcards and letters are packed in musty boxes.
My calligraphy pens are stored with bones and old pennies.
I could not find a pay phone, absent is the phone from the kitchen wall.
My left foot barely remembers that there was a clutch.
Missing are the sounds of hoofs on cobble stones.
There is no longer a need to mend our socks and replace buttons.
The furnace no longer needs firing, nor a banking of coal for the night.
The future has put a strange and easy world around our lives.
There is much less to do but fewer places to find work.
What will we do if we last another year, or ten, or twenty?
Bills will continue to come, and notes to pay, and taxes I am sure.
Will we dance, sing, recite poems, or will be be fighting for our lives?
The sound of a passing train blows its’ low horn warnings though the crossings.
Everything we are saying, singing, even our thinking, is interrupted.
We suddenly remember that time is moving, everything is moving. Even sitting we are moving!
The train has passed, and the last clicking clacking coach gives us relief, but reminds us…
We have already been to where we are going, and it is all familiar now.
The future is a visit to the past!
