2006 I am the Immigrant

Poem – I am the immigrant
I am the one you love to hate
I am the one you don’t want to see
I am the one you avoid, I am the one you fear
sometimes I hate you with all my heart
I hate you I hate you for your privilege
you can afford to disrespect me
sometimes I hate you with all my might
I hate you I hate you for your wealth
you can afford to criticize me
sometimes I hate you with all my soul
I hate you I hate you for your white skin
you can afford to distance me
sometimes I hate you with all my thoughts
I hate you I hate you because I have no power to you
you can use me and I have to allow your abuse
I am the immigrant
I am the one who could no longer listen to my children crying from hunger
I am the one who could not afford medicine for my dying mother
I am the one who risked my life to come to your country
I am the one who desperately wishes to work and labor
blessed Jesus looks down on me in my sleep and I fear his reproach
he sees me in my toil and he hears me when my tears are screaming out
I beg him to protect my children, to protect my family, to save us from despair
blessed Jesus asks me to love, to forgive, to believe in him,
and most difficult he asks me to love you, the one who disdains, oppresses, and hates me
 I am the immigrant
I am the one who believes that the first shall be last
I am the one who believes that the last shall be first
I am the one who holds fast to the Lord my God
I am the one who sometimes hates you,
but for the love of him I dare not
